Wendy G. Winters, Ph.D.

A professor emeritus at Howard University, Dr. Winters was a member of the sociology department.  She previously served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.  She has taught at Yale University, the University of Connecticut School of Social Work where she served as Assistant Dean of Educational Affairs and at Smith College, where she was Dean of the College.  She is co-author of The Practice of Social Work in Schools: An Ecological Perspective, Free Press/Macmillan and author of African American Mothers and Urban Schools; The Power of Participation, Lexington Books/An Imprint of Macmillan, Inc.  She has collabOSP-RAted on a number of   professional and research articles. 

She served as Chief Social Worker of the Baldwin King School Program; the forerunner of the School Development Program headed by Dr. James Comer Yale University Child Study Center and was instrumental in fostering the parent involvement component. 

A Ph.D. in sociology from Yale University and a M.S. from Columbia University School of Social Work Dr. Winters continues to foster collabOSP-RAtion between universities, schools, parents and local communities. She has consulted with school systems in Connecticut; Baltimore, M.D; Washington, D.C.; Massachusetts, New York City: White Plains, NY; New Orleans; Milwaukee; North Carolina and St. Louis, Missouri.  

Her board memberships include; the National Board of Directors of Parents for Public Schools; the Board of Managers of Casey Family Services, the operational arm of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Black Women’s Agenda where she serves as editor of the BWA Report Newsletter.  She is associate editor of JESPAR, Journal of Education of Students Placed at Risk published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. New Jersey and London.
