Lucile L. Adams-Campbell. Ph.D.

Dr. Adams-Campbell, the Director of the Howard University Cancer Center, is currently the only African-American woman Director of a Cancer Center in the country. She received a B.S. in Biology in 1977 and a M.S. in Biomedical Science in 1979 from Drexel University in Philadelphia. She received her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh in 1983 and was the first African-American female to receive a Ph.D. in epidemiology in the country. She is a tenured Professor of Medicine and also Professor of Community Health and Family Practice, Graduate Professor of Psychology and Associate Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at Howard University. She is adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and Dr. Adams-Campbell is a fellow of the American College of Epidemiology Dr. Adams-Campbell just received the Distinguished Alumni Fellows Award from her alma mater -University of Pittsburgh which recognized her accomplished research in sub-Saharan Africa. She has also received numerous awards including Sigma Xi National Lecturer, FDA Deputy Commissioner Community Service Award, Searle Distinguished Graduate Award, Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, Outstanding Faculty Researcher Award from the Howard University College of Medicine, and McDonald's Black History Maker of Today Award in Medicine. Dr. Adams-Campbell's research focuses on women's health issues, and cancer prevention and control in the African DiaspOSP-RA. She maintains research collabOSP-RAtions and partnerships at the General Hospital of Yaounde (Cameroon), the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Transkei, (South Africa), the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (Jamaica), the Jamaica Cancer Society, the Medical Research Council and the Cancer Association of South Africa. Dr. Adams-Campbell continues the search for improved health, through research, which knows no political or physical boundaries nor constrained by race or wealth or beliefs.
