Tritobia Hayes Benjamin,
Ph.D.
Tritobia Hayes Benjamin is associate dean
of the Division of Fine Arts. College of Arts and Sciences, professor of art
history, and director of the Gallery of Art at Howard University. She is
also a graduate of Howard having earned her Bachelor's and Master's degree
in art history. She holds the Ph.D. in art history from the University of
Maryland.
Dr. Benjamin's professional career has been
very distinguished. particularly in the field of African American art
history. Her academic work has been mainly on the faculty of Howard
University's former College of Fine Arts. where she has served continuously
since 1970. (The College of Fine Arts merged with the College of Arts and
Sciences August I, 1997).
Her service and expertise have been in
demand throughout the United States and further afield: and. her list of
consultancies, awards, lectureships and jurorships is both extensive and
impressive. She has undertaken professional study tours in Africa and
Europe. Her professional memberships portray the life and energies of a
scholar and practitioner who is committed to excellence in the field of
African American art history.
Benjamin has written and lectured widely on
African American art and artists, including the 1994 publication, The Life
and Art of Lois Mailou Jones. Her essays for several exhibition catalogues
include The Awesome Image of James Phillips: Old and New visions: Bearing
Witness: Art by ContempOSP-RAry African American Women: From Academic
Representation to Poetic Abstraction: The Art of Alma Thomas and Three
Generations of African American Women Sculptors: A Study in Paradox which
she also co-curated.
